I scheduled you for next week off, so make sure you let your family know.

Next week? I appreciate it, but I will only be taking Thanksgiving itself off, the rest of the time I will be working my normal hours.

You misunderstand, you will be taking that time off. I will not be giving you hours for that time. So go enjoy your week.

A full WEEK?! I can’t take a full week off, have you seen the shard five bug list? I’ll be struggling to get shard five finished by the new year deadline as is.

First off, yes, I have seen the bug list, because I wrote it. I’m the one who manages the burn-down sheet, of course, I know how long it’s expected to take. But I also know you have not taken PTO since last year, you are stretched thin as is, and you are having anxiety attacks over the amount of work you have to do (we will discuss why you thought Sarah could keep a secret later). I also know your productivity has gone down by approximately 30% over the course of the last four months, which correlates exactly to when you started taking on way more tickets than you could handle.

I’m saying this both as a project manager and a friend: you need to rest. You need to take care of yourself. Not everything needs to be perfect, and not everything needs to be done by you. And so, I am allocating that you take a week off, go see your family, and come back 30% more efficient. This is not negotiable.
